How To Increase a Diamonds Shine with Ammonia

How To Increase a Diamonds Shine with Ammonia

Diamonds are the most precious of stones and increase value over time. Whether you have earrings, rings, pendant or a bracelet, diamonds are sure to catch anyones attention for the sparkle and shine it gives off. To keep your jewelry looking its best, you need to clean it occasionally.

You dont need to purchase a jewelry cleaning kit or to bring it to a professional to get it done. If you have a little bit of ammonia and water in the home, you can do it yourself. Heres how.

Make sure your diamond is unfilled. Only unfilled diamonds can be cleaned with an acidic solution such as ammonia. If your diamond is fracture filled, you need to use a mild detergent. Fracture filled means that the imperfections in the diamond have been filled in with a liquid substance. This liquid dissolves over time, which is why you cannot soak it in an ammonia solution. To find out what type you have, you may bring your diamond to a professional who can assess it for you. If you have a trained eye, you may also check the diamond using a jewelers loupe.

Prepare the cleaning solution. In a small bowl, place a capful of ammonia and a capful of water. Its best to do this on a counter or table. Avoid doing this on the sink unless your drain is plugged. Give it a good swish to make sure the solution is mixed properly.

Give the diamonds a bath. Remove the diamonds you want to clean from the jewelry box. If the diamonds are set with other stones, be careful. This solution can be used on diamonds, sapphires and rubies. Avoid soaking the diamonds if it is set with other gems that may not be able to withstand the acidity of the ammonia solution. Place the jewelry in the bowl with the ammonia solution and let it soak for about four or five minutes. Theres no need to soak it for an extended period of time.

Scrub the diamonds a bit. Using a soft bristled toothbrush, scrub the diamonds clean. You should immediately notice a difference in the luster of the gems. Use gentle circular motions instead of a forward backward motion.

Give it a good rinse. Dip the jewelry in the ammonia solution for a few seconds before rinsing it in cold water.

Pat dry. Shake off the excess water and pat dry with a piece of soft cloth. On a small towel, you may place the jewelry and allow it to air dry. When the pieces are ready, store it properly. The jewelry case should have a non abrasive surface. Also, avoid storing all your gems in one container since it can get scratched.

How To Clean Your Watch

How To Clean Your Watch

You should use a mild soap or rubbing alcohol for most types of watches. If you have a gold watch, or it is made of silver or a platinum material, you might consider using a small amount of jewelry cleaner. Using water alone is not going to be very effective. If you do use some water, make sure that it is mixed with a mild soap such as dish soap and dont get the inside wet.

Step 3: Use a soft cloth or a soft toothbrush.

Dont use a scrubber sponge, a hard bristle toothbrush or paper towel. Abrasive materials can add scratches to your watch that you dont want. Make sure that you use a soft material to wipe away stains, oils and germs. Rub gently in a circular motion to clean your watch.

It is important to make sure that you remove all of the moisture from the band of the watch, and any other part of the watch that may have gotten wet. Even though you do not use very much liquid during the cleaning process, you will want to make sure that there isnt any moisture left. If you leave it wet, mildew might develop, and you dont want that on your watch! Also, depending on the material it is made out of, wetness can cause rust. Make sure that you take a smooth, dry cloth and dry your watch well.

That is all. Now you can put your watch band back on and wear your watch. You might want to leave it alone for a while since you put the work into cleaning it, however. Anyway, that is all there is to it, and you can clean your watch every couple of months to keep it shiny and nice.
